The Erie Community College men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to Herkimer to compete in the Herkimer County Community College Invitational Jan. 28. While the men's team finished fourth the women's team finished third in the quad event.
Among the highlights for the Kat swimmers were securing 14 places in combined top-three event positions. Both the men's team and women's team earned seven of those positions each. Leading the way for the women's team was Allie DeBiase with three, while the men's team had a pair of top-three individual showings by Andrew Achenbach to go along with participation in a pair of relay top-three finishes as well.
DeBiase secured three first places in freestyle competition. She took the 100-yard, 200-yard, and 500-yard freestyles with teammate Tabby Smith not far behind with one first-place and two second-place finishes. Smith won the 50-yard freestyle and finished second only to DeBiase in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. Jessica Raymond also finished in second place, but at the 1-meter diving board.
Achenbach took two third-place showing and was part of two relay teams that finished second and third. He finished third in two freestyle races – 50-yard and 100-yard.
Three other Kats from the men's team finished in the top-three in various 200-yard events. Mike Oldman finished second in the 200-yard butterfly, while Charlie May had a second-place showing at the 200-yard backstroke. Bradley Zifra finished third in the 200-yard freestyle.
Zifra, May, Oldman and Achenbach comprised the men's relay teams that finished with a pair of top-three relay showings at 400 yards. The tandem had a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, and a third place finish in the 400-yard medley relay.
