Williamsville, NY -- Sophomore catcher Yeshua Saint had five hits in leading the Erie Community College (10-9/2-1 Region III West) baseball team to a doubleheader sweep over Genesee Community College (6-9/0-4 Region III West) Tuesday afternoon in Williamsville. Erie overcame an early three-run deficit to take the opener, 8-4, and held on the win the nightcap, 9-7.
Saint was three-for-four with four RBI for the Kats in the second game. Erie would need all the runs it scored early as they let a 9-2 lead almost slip away in the ninth inning before sophomore Alex Lopez came in and got the final two outs. Sophomore first baseman Felix Garcia was three-for-three.
Sophomore pitcher Gabriel Seijas earned the win on the mound. He allowed four runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work. He struck out nine and walked three.
Sophomore pitcher Chris Vitale allowed four hits and four unearned runs over seven innings of work to pick up the win in an error-filled opener. He struck out 10 and walked three.
Genesee opened up a 4-1 lead after two innings before a five-run third inning gave the Kats the lead for good. The two teams combined for eight errors in the opener. Saint had two hits, which included a double and a triple, and freshman center fielder Alex Whipple was two-for-three with a double and an RBI to lead Erie at the plate.
The two teams will meet again Thursday, April 12 in Batavia for a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m.
