Orchard Park, NY -- Two blocked punts returned for touchdowns in the first quarter set the tone early for the Kats as they would defeat the Hudson Valley Community College Vikings 48-14 at West Herr Stadium in the SUNY Erie home opener.
Marvin Appleberry would block a Hudson Valley punt on the first drive of the game that would be returned for a touchdown by Joshua Verges. On the following drive, Jon Dolac would block another punt to set up Appleberry for a return that resulted in a touchdown to give the Kats an early 14-0 lead.
Hudson Valley would score in the second quarter, sending the Kats into the half with a 14-7 lead.
Hudson Valley would intercept a pass from Jack Edwards for a touchdown early in the third quarter to tie the game at 14.
From there, the scoring was all Kats as the Kats scored 34 unanswered points.
Cody Workman would find the endzone with a 19 yard touchdown run with 5 minutes to play in the third quarter. Workman would later throw a 39 yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Hinton, putting the Kats up 27-14 after a bobbled snap on the PAT lead to a failed attempt. Minutes later, the Kats would find the endzone again when Workman would hit Che'kore Moore for a 23 yard touchdown pass. Workman would find Spencer Loftus on the two point conversion attempt to put the Kats up 35-14. A third touchdown pass from Workman would find Isaiah Brown in the endzone from 39 yards out. A blocked extra point would put the Kats up 41-14.
A single touchdown run from Spencer Loftus in the fourth would end the scoring for the game, putting the Kats up 48-14.
The Kats defense would come away with two interceptions (Joshua Verges and Samuel Fairley) and 4 sacks (Tory Rogers, Edward Kachmarek (2), and a uncredited team sack) on the day.
The Kats will look to keep their winning ways going when they travel to Utica on September 16th to take on the Utica College JV team. Kickoff is set for 1PM.
