The SUNY Erie Community College men’s basketball team will look to defend its regional crown when it hosts the 2019 Region 3 Division 2 Men’s Basketball Tournament this weekend at Burt Flickinger Athletic Center.
Erie, the tournament’s top seed, is ranked 12th in the latest NJCAA Division 2 with a 22-3 overall record. Under 20th-year head coach Alex Nwora, the Kats are averaging 95.8 points per game. Sophomore Michael Motley leads five players in double figures scoring with 15.1 points per game to go along with 6.3 rebounds per game. Sophomore Kyle Harris is at 13.9 points per game followed by sophomore Kasey Walker-Gregg at 12.4 points per game.
The tournament tips off Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m. when Erie hosts Genesee Community College (15-13) in the first semifinal. That game will be followed by second-seeded Niagara County Community College (23-7) playing Jamestown Community College (12-14) at 3 p.m. The championship game will be Sunday, March 3 at 1 p.m.
The winner of this weekend’s Region 3 Tournament will host a four-team District Tournament next weekend, which will also includes the Region 3 runner up, Region 15 (Downstate NY) champion and Region 19 (NJ and Eastern PA) champion.
