The Erie Community College Hockey team split their weekend games winning at home and taking a loss on the road. The Kats hosted Alfred State at the Cheektowaga Town Ice Rink on Saturday where they defeated the Pioneers 5-4. Prior to the game both teams shared a moment of silence to honor Alfred teammate Cameron Velasquez. Velasquez was killed in a car accident last month driving home to Buffalo from Alfred. His cousin, Mike Velasquez, plays for Erie Community College.
Five different players tallied goals for the Kats on Saturday. Angelo Iglesiais netted his first of the season to open the scoring in the first period. Chase Judkiewicz put the Kats up 2-0 with his second of the season. Alfred tied it up 2-2 before Shawn Kross (8) put the Kats up 3-2 at the buzzer of the first period.
Brett Sardina (9) had the lone goal of the second period making it 4-2 Kats. Alfred would make it 4-3 early in the third but a minute and half later John Mueller (3) put Erie back up by two. Alfred would tally one more with about five minutes left before the Kats defense shut it down. Erie goalkeeper Joshua Mitchell recorded 32 saves on the day.
In a quick turnaround, the Kats traveled to Oswego for an ACHA matchup against Oswego State on Sunday afternoon. The Lakers defeated the Kats 5-1. Erie goaltender Hadley Heath made 20 saves in the first period alone keeping the Kats in the game before Oswego opened the scoring in the second period tallying four goals. Erie's lone goal came in the sceond period off the stick of Nolan O'Hara for his first of the year. Oswego would add a fifth in the third to complete the scoring.
The Kats will travel to Potsdam to face Clarkson Univeristy DII on Saturday at 6:30 pm and again on Sunday at noon.
