Batavia, NY -- The Kats defeated Jamestown Community College in a wet, rainy and physical game today, 2-0, to win the NJCAA Region III District B Championship at Genesee Community College.
The Kats would come out offensively, pressing the Jayhawks early. The Kats would find the back of the net in the 7th minute when Hannah Parucki would bury a pass from Rachel Fiore to give the Kats an early one goal lead.
The Kats would continue to pressure on offense leading to a corner kick by Sam Carey that would lead to a handball by the Jayhawks in the box, giving the Kats a penalty kick. Rachel Fiore would give the Kats a 2-0 lead when she beat the goalkeeper on the penalty kick with a shot to the top left in the 39th minute.
Taking a two goal lead into the half, the Kats would have to play defensively to start the second half as the Jayhawks looked to answer. A stout Kats defense would hold up in the face of adversity, using speed and finesse to move the ball back to the offensive half of the field. Goalkeeper Autumn Farino and the Kats defense would hold on for a clean sheet, with Farino adding three saves to the effort.
Rachel Fiore would be named Most Valueable Player of the Region III tournament for her play.
The win qualifies the Kats for the NJCAA National Championship tournament for the second straight year. The tournament is being held from November 9-12 at Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden, New York.
