Orchard Park, NY -- The Kats faced a tall task when they hosted No. 1 Herkimer on Saturday, but rose to the occasion when they upset the top team in the nation, 5-4 at SUNY Erie South.
The Kats jumped out to an early lead when Britini Bailey scored unassisted in the 7th minute. Herkimer would answer in the 8th minute before the Kats would score two more and send the Kats into halftime with a 3-1 lead. Annaliese Ziemann and Jena Schelble would score for the Kats.
Kayla Goeddertz and Jill Spangler would score to start the second half hot for the Kats.
Down 5-1, Herkimer would make a strong surge, scoring 3 unanswered goals, but the Kats defenders and goalkeeper would hold on for the win.
"The girls were disappointed in the scoreline, giving up 3 goals late in the game, which is encouraging that they carry themselves to that standard. At the end of the day, we got the win, and I'm extremely happy for the girls and for our program" said Coach Gary Boughton.
"I really loved seeing how well prepared the girls were mentally today. We needed to rise to the occasion and certainly did so. I'm very proud of how they rode out some of the lows of the game and found the way to control it."
The Kats are back in action on Thursday when they host Genesee Community College at 2PM at SUNY Erie South.
