The Erie Community College men's and women's basketball teams both dropped their opening playoff contests during Region III playoffs.
The men's team played first with a game against the Community College of Rhode Island at Niagara County Community College, March 3.
The men's team fell to the Knights, 94-71 to finish 15-13 on the year. CCRI then advanced against top-seed and host Niagara County Community College and lost 70-59, March 4. NCCC then went on to capture the region crown with an 81-80 overtime win against Genesee Community College, March 5.
The women's team lost to Niagara County Community College, 59-36, March 4, to finish 11-15 on the year. NCCC then lost to host Monroe Community College, 80-68, in the regional title game, March 5.
The women's team was led by Aaron Shabazz, who recorded a double-double with a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds. Areyon Canada also recorded 10 rebounds for the Kats in a see-saw game that produced a combined 11 ties and lead changes.
Both the NCCC men's team and the MCC women's team will now move on to the national tournament representing Region III at the end of March.
