Lacrosse Kats Claw Cougars in 1st Region Win
Guzda nets 6 goals on 6 shots
The Erie Community College women's lacrosse team opened region play with a 17-3 road win over Genesee Community College, March 29.
It took the Kats less than 10 minutes to net what would turn out to be the game winner. Courtney Guzda scored three of team's first four goals including the game winner on her way to a six-goal performance on six shots for the day. Guzda was in on nearly half the team's scoring by also adding a pair of assists. Two of her scores came via free position.
Also starring for the Kats was Maria Blasio, who scored four times, while adding an assist and a team-high nine groundballs. One of Blasio's goals was from free position, while the team totaled five free position goals overall.
Erie got a pair of goals each from Samantha Ciambor, Mackenzie Neary and Zoelle Wheeler. Ashley Weir added a single tally, while Sophie Jones recorded eight saves from the cage. Neary also added a team-high dozen draw controls in the win.
The Kats had a balanced scoring attack with nine goals in the first half and eight in the second and out-scored the opposition by seven goals in each half with a season-high 26 shots on net.
The team also recorded 39 groundballs led by Blasio's nine, while Shannon Munley and Wheeler had five and Julia Prychodko added four.
Erie continues on the road to Watertown with a match against Jefferson Community College, April 1 at 6 p.m.
