The Erie Community College women's lacrosse team wrapped up its 2017 season with a tough task at hand. The Kats entered the Region III opening playoff round against the undefeated defending national champion Monroe Community College on their home field May 6.
The highlight for Erie stretched over a 13-minute span when with 14:30 left in the first half until about 1:30 remaining, the Kats out-scored the Tribunes, but they couldn't maintain that over 60 minutes and the national champions showed why they are the NJCAA's best with the win.
Erie had a goal in each half with Courtney Guzda getting on the board first for Erie with an assist from Maria Blasio. Mackenzie Neary netted the Kats' second-half goal. Emily Mahoney registered three saves in the cage.
The Kats collected 16 groundballs on the day and were led by Mahoney and Neary with three apiece. Ashley Weir, Emily Keating, Zoelle Wheeler and Guzda each recorded a pair of groundballs on the day.
Neary and Wheeler led the team in both shots on goal and draw controls with four apiece in each category.
With the 23-2 win over the Kats, MCC will go against Onondaga for the region title May 7.
