SUNY Erie Opens New Home for Erie Kats Athletics
SUNY Erie Community College officially ushered in a new era of Erie Kats athletics on Monday, celebrating the grand opening of its new state-of-the-art multisport turf facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at North Campus.
The new athletic complex will serve as the home of Erie Kats football, men's soccer, women's soccer, and softball, providing student-athletes with a premier venue to compete, train, and represent SUNY Erie for years to come.
SUNY Erie President Dr. Adiam Tsegai, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, members of the college community, student-athletes, alumni, and supporters gathered to commemorate the milestone investment in Erie athletics.
"This remarkable investment in our student-athletes reflects SUNY Erie's commitment to excellence, opportunity, and success both on and off the field," college officials said during the ceremony.
The complex features a synthetic turf multipurpose field for football and soccer, as well as an adjacent softball field, all proudly displaying the Erie Kats and SUNY Erie logos in the college's signature red and black colors. The facility will also provide additional training opportunities for the baseball program.
The opening comes following one of the most successful years in recent Erie athletics history, highlighted by three regional championship teams. Football, men's bowling and softball captured NJCAA Region III championships during the 2025-26 academic year, while numerous Erie student-athletes earned postseason honors across multiple sports.
"I'm excited for the kids, and that's what it's all about," said Director of Athletics Steve Mullen. "We have a lot of students from this community who are going to be able to participate on this field. This gives our coaches one more tool to sell the college to prospective students."
The new facility will make its competitive debut this fall. The men's and women's soccer teams will open play on the field on August 28, while the football team will host its first game on the new turf on August 29. The softball program will begin competing on its new home field during the spring 2027 season.
The athletic complex is also part of a larger vision for the future of Erie athletics. A second phase of the project will include a dedicated turf baseball field on the west side of the complex, while a new building featuring locker rooms, restrooms, and concession facilities is expected to open next summer.
Monday's ribbon cutting marked more than the opening of a new facility—it signaled the beginning of a new chapter for Erie Kats athletics. The championships, memories, traditions, and achievements that will take place on these fields are still to come, and SUNY Erie looks forward to seeing future generations of Kats compete and succeed in their new home.
