Men's Basketball Cruises Past Cayuga
It was a festive atmosphere at the Burt Flickinger Center on Tuesday when the Erie Student Government Association celebrated the men's and women's basketball teams. Amongst the balloons and noise makers, fans were treated to food, drinks and giveaways as both teams took on the Cayuga Spartans.
To the delight of the crowd, it was all Erie as the men cruised past Cayuga to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Kats scored first and never trailed in the 90-42 victory. Sophomore Hugo Silva led the offense scoring 19 points with three assists and five rebounds. Sophomore A'Mage Tate was 4-9 from beyond the arc with 12 points, two assists and three steals. Freshman Zachary Phillips scored 11 coming off the bench.
The ladies fell to the Spartans 47-41. Erie struggled to find any rhythm to start the game and quickly fell behind 18-0. Mia Special would finally find the net when she hit a three-point shot at the 3:49 mark. Erie would find themselves down at the half 20-5. The third quarter saw the teams exchanging buckets as Erie began to find some momentum that would eventually draw them within two points with over a minute to go in the game. Erie pressured but the comeback was not meant to be as they could not get several three point attempts to fall in.
Darion Jonathan and Special led the Kats offense, scoring 14 and 12 respectively. Jonathan had seven rebounds and five steals while Special added five rebounds and two steals. Alexandria Silverstor had 20 rebounds and seven blocks while scoring five points.
Both teams will travel to Monroe Community College this weekend for the Monroe Classic.
