Morgantown, WV- It what has become a trend for the Erie Hockey team, they split their weekend series with West Virginia University.
Despite having 41 shots on goal the Kats lost 5-3 on Saturday. "While we played well we were not able to capitalize on our chances." said assistant coach Bill Orr.
West Virgina built a 2-0 lead early in the first period before Erie got on the board with a goal from Cole Miller. Three minutes later the Kats tied it up when Shawn Kross netted one on the power play. West Virginia scored with less than a minute left in the first to take a 3-2 lead into the intermission.
The teams exchanged goals in the second with Erie's coming off the stick of Brett Sardina for his 12th of the year. West Virginia added one more in the third to seal the win.
On Sunday, the Kats rebounded with a 3-2 victory. Shawn Kross opened the scoring for Erie with his 13th goal of the year. Brett Sardina scored early in the second for a 2-0 lead. West Virginia scored two of their own before the end of the period to tie it up.
The winning goal came off the stick of Timothy Bogdan at the 16:09 mark of the third period. Erie goaltender Mike Lisman made 17 saves in the third period and 35 on the day to help in the Kats victory.
Erie will be on the road again this weekend when they play Rensselear Polutechnic Institue on Saturday and Albany on Sunday.
