Softball Struggles to Start Season

Erie Community College softball had a tough start to the season, going 0-4 in the Florida portion of the their season.
In the opening game, Grace Szpylman struck out 11 batters, but the Kats fell to West Virginia Wesleyan 4-0 on Friday. Szpylman surrendered three hits and four runs over seven innings while walking three.
Anna Anna led Erie with one hit in two at bats. She also had two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, collecting seven walks for the game.
In the second game, the Kats faced a tough Cuyahoga Community College, dropping the game 8-0. Kira Kilonski, Anna Cervino, and Olivia Ball each collected one hit for the Kats.
On Saturday, Olivia Ball collected three hits in four at bats, but Erie lost to Mid Michigan College Lakers 15-4. Ball hit a home run to left field in the first inning, singled in the fifth inning, and singled in the seventh inning.
Szpylman stepped in the circle first for Erie. The righty allowed 15 hits and 15 runs (one earned) over seven innings, striking out 12 and walking one. Erie had patience at the plate, collecting five walks for the game.
The Kats had trouble keeping up with Lincoln Land Loggers in a 9-1 loss in the second game Saturday.
The Kats opened the scoring in the first after Ball hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run. Lincoln Land Loggers jumped into the lead in the bottom of the second and added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning enroute to the win.
Cheyenne Barnard opened the game for Erie. The starting pitcher surrendered 10 hits and eight runs (six earned) over three innings, striking out none and walking one.
Ball went 1-for-1 at the plate and led the team with one run batted in. Cervino Anna went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Erie in hits.
Kats Softball play on Monday against Pacific lutheran University JV in their next game.
