SUNY Erie Women's Softball earned a split in Tuesday's doubleheader against Mohawk Community College, cruising to a convincing win in game one before falling in the nightcap.
Erie came out swinging in the opener, scoring four runs in the first inning to set the tone in an 8-2 victory. Amelia Potter got things started with an RBI single before Hailey Wisser broke the game open with a three-run home run to left.
The Kats continued to add on, extending the lead to 6-1 in the third inning with help from a Mohawk error. From there, Erie stayed in control behind a strong performance in the circle.
Grace Szpylman went the distance, allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out seven. At the plate, Wisser led the way with three RBIs, finishing 2-for-4. Natalie Witt, Potter, Wisser, and Carly Fraser each recorded two hits as Erie piled up 10 hits and showed patience with four walks. The Kats also flashed the leather, turning a double play.
Game two told a different story, as Mohawk used a big fourth inning to hand Erie a 6-0 loss. Mohawk plated four runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run double and timely hitting to take control.
Amelia Potter started in the circle for Erie, allowing six runs (five earned) over four and two-thirds innings. Mohawk's pitcher kept the Kats off balance all game, limiting Erie to just three hits and no runs.
Ashlyn Pignone, Natalie Witt, and Hailey Wisser each recorded a hit for Erie. One bright spot came in the seventh inning when Grace Szpylman delivered an immaculate inning, striking out the side on just nine pitches.
