Kats’ Season Ends in Region III Semifinals After Hard-Fought Battle
The Erie Community College Kats saw their season come to a close Saturday in the NJCAA Region III Semifinals, falling 70-63 to Monroe Community College despite holding a seven-point halftime lead.
Erie set the tone early with defensive intensity and balanced scoring, building momentum throughout the first half. After weathering an early deficit, the Kats found their rhythm behind key baskets from Saliou Diokhane and Moudou Diakhate, while JohnPaul Agu knocked down a three-pointer to spark a surge.
The Kats' defensive effort was evident, forcing turnovers and turning them into transition opportunities. Bright Ufele and Taesyn Slating provided energy on both ends, and Jabar Wheatley closed the half in strong fashion with a jumper in the final seconds to give Erie a 30-23 advantage at the break.
Coming out of halftime, Erie extended its lead to as many as seven points, highlighted by a three from Wheatley and strong interior play from Ufele. However, Monroe began to chip away midway through the second half, capitalizing on second-chance opportunities and converting turnovers into points to regain the lead.
Erie continued to battle. Slating knocked down a clutch three-pointer to pull the Kats within three, and Agu's aggressive play on both ends kept the deficit within reach late. Diakhate added a late three-pointer, but Monroe was able to convert key free throws down the stretch to seal the decision.
The Kats showed resilience throughout, leading for much of the contest and competing until the final buzzer.
